Bowness-on-Solway is a village on the Solway coast,
and the western end of Hadrian’s Wall. The parish
church, dedicated to St Michael, dates back to
Norman times, and built using stone from the local
Roman fort, Maia. A transcript of all the gravestone
inscriptions can be downloaded HERE.
Photos of all the memorials at Bowness-on-Solway
are to be found on my
online album; The project to record all the grave-
stones was started by Sue Gallagher and the late
Marian Wood in the 1990s, and completed by Sue
Gallagher and Sue Yardley in 2014. Their transcript,
along with a churchyard plan can be found at the
where each section is, though there are some ad-
ditional stones in our transcript not included in the
original version.
Photographs of all the stones were taken 2021 -
2022 by Bridget Casson and William Bundred, and
many of the gaps in the transcription were
checked and completed, using the same number-
ing as the original transcript. Thanks to Steve
Hinks for all his help.
E-MAIL me if you would like a higher resolution
copy of any of the photos.
